The questions to ask before you book your holiday and your mobility scooter or wheelchair and mobility aids.
If the area you plan to holiday for example like the Costa del Sol is new to you please do some research before booking.
  • Here is a basic list of questions to pose before making the booking.
  1. Make sure what facilities your accommodation has, are they wheelchair and mobility scooter friendly.

  2. Ask either the apartment/hotel or your tour operator/travel agent whether there are facilities to charge your mobility scooter at night? Find out what the hotel policy is.

  3. Is there a place to store it at night? (ie the luggage room or is your room large enough).

  4. Make sure that the lift is large enough to accommodate the size of mobility scooter you wish to rent, especially if you cannot walk to your room without it.

  5. If you are in an apartment, find out which floor it is.

  6. What is the size of lift and can you manoeuvre the mobility scooter from the lift to the door of the apartment.

  7. If you cannot get your scooter to the apartment are their facilities in the lobby to store the scooter or will they allow you to leave it in the foyer.

  8. Please make sure there is a socket to charge it from as most apartments in Spain do not have sockets in the lobbies.

  9. Whether it is an apartment or a hotel either on the Costa del Sol or elsewhere in the world, check what access there is outside. Make sure if there is a ramp it is not on an incline too steep for the mobility scooter or a power wheelchair to climb, we are aware of hotels all over the world that pay lip service to disabled facilities but in fact have ramps like the north face of the Eiger!

  10. If you need them, make sure the accommodation has an accessible bath/shower with grab rails, and if needed that the furniture is comfortable and easy to get out of.

  11. If you need mobility equipment, decide whether to bring your own or to hire any mobility equipment from your holiday destination. Firstly check what the accommodation can provide or rent and if they cannot provide it find a reputable rental shop to order the equipment in advance. Please do not leave it till you arrive, you could be disappointed and the lack of equipment could spoil your holiday.

  12. Importantly your rights have been established by the EEC don’t feel that you have to apologise for needing these facilities and if those facilities are not there then make sure your tour operator/travel agent is made aware of it, point out to the hotel/apartment that they will be losing valuable revenue by not having proper disabled equipment and facilities within their premises.

  13. Lastly if you are coming to Spain have a look at the details we have written about all areas in the Costa del Sol look on our web site at the areas of Marbella, Fuengirola, Calahonda, Benalmadena, Los Boliches, La Cala, Riviera, Torremolinos, El Pinillo, Mijas, Alhuarin el Grande, Alhuarin del la Torre, Cartama, Coin, Estapona, Puerto Banus, Cabapino, Mijas Costa, Montemar, Malaga, San Pedro. regarding disabled facilities and the general lay out of the area
